Magnolia Park
LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Hedlund Design Group, teamed with Hord Coplan Macht, was hired in 2015 for the redesign of Magnolia Park in Arlington, MA.
The new park design is ecologically-sensitive and had significant community involvement. The three main design components consist of a new playground, basketball court, and community garden. Highlights of the park include an accessible 54-plot community garden that has been called a model design for urban gardening.
Forty-one new trees are added to the park and new native plantings are used to create homes for wildlife and pollinators. Poles from the old playground were salvaged and used for a community competition to install birdhouses in a naturalized area of the park. A low-meadow is being established there to create a habitat for pollinators.
Several community groups were involved in the design process, including the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts who donated their services to build a community table for the park out of a tree removed from the site.
