UMass Amherst
Historic Markers
As part of the 150th anniversary of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, four historical markers were designed and installed on campus. These markers describe the history of the founding of the Massachusetts Agricultural College, now known as UMass Amherst. The illuminated glass structures feature life-sized historic photographs of students on one side, and a series of images and anecdotes about the history of the school on the other side. Peter Hedlund was the Principal in Charge of this project while at Sasaki.
“Students can look eye-to-eye at life size figures of earlier students from 100 years in the past, and come to realize that the story of the founding of their university continues today in them, and in their relationship to the greater community and environment ... Nothing quite like them exists anywhere else.”
